Moving Checklist
Moving ranks as one of the most stressful activities in life, so whether you’re property
flipping, moving out of or into your primary residence or anything in between,
knowing when and how you’re going to attack the moving process is key.
One item to greatly reduce the angst that can come from moving is a moving
checklist which provides chronological moving tips and reminders as you approach
the big moving day! Never fear, the moving checklist is here:
Right Away
• Secure your movers or rental truck as soon as you find out you are
moving.
• Get quotes from a few vendors to check pricing variants.
• Verify the insurance specifics of each moving company.
• Get everything in writing.
• Book your movers.
Other Considerations • Book move to begin in the morning so you aren’t still moving in the evening. • Do you live in a high-rise or are you moving to a high-rise? • Do you need to book the elevator? • Do you need to notify the building superintendent? • Do you have lots of stairs in your residence?
Note: Elevators, stairs and the like greatly extend the time it takes to move.
Plan for this extra time on the day of the move.
Pre-Move
1-3 Months in Advance
Change-of-Address
Make a list of every address you have to change. See sample below. As soon as
you know your new address, notify all contacts on your list of your new address.
• Post office
• Banks
• Credit Cards
• Driver’s License
• Passport
• Medical Card
• Hydro
• Cable
• Phone/Cell phone
• Insurance
• Doctor/Dentist/etc...
• Charities you Support
• Magazine/Newspaper/etc... Subscriptions
Organize
When going through all your belongings in preparation to move, people tend to realize what they don’t
want or need. If your moving timeline allows you a little time
to organize,
purge the items you’re done with and keep those you see fitting into your new
place.
Moving Supplies
Acquire or order moving supplies. Some people like to grab used boxes from
Starbucks, while others like crisp new boxes. Whatever you like, get your supplies in
advance so you’ll be ready when it comes time to pack. Here is a sample of
the moving supplies you may need:
• Boxes
• Packing tape with applicator
• Permanent Marker to write on boxes
• Bubble wrap or packing foam
• Tissue paper or newspaper
Suggestion: Wrap delicate items with tissue paper first, followed by
newspaper. This prevents color transfer and guards items from getting dirty.
4 Weeks in Advance
Start Packing
• Pack in this order: items you don’t use, items you use intermittently, items
you use all the time.
• Try to pack valuables like your stereo system and TV in their original
boxes. If this isn’t possible, pack them in a very tight and secure manner.
• Organize all your small and medium-sized belongings in boxes, all the
big items will be dealt with by
movers.
• Securely pack everything with newsprint, tissue paper, bubble wrap or the
like. Fill in all extra spaces in each box. You can never be too careful.
• Label every box with contents and room it should be placed in on each side.
When the boxes are stacked, the side labels will come in handy.
2 Weeks in Advance
Confirm movers.
1 Week in Advance
• The majority of your packing should be done by this point.
• Set aside items you wish to take to your new residence yourself. Note:
Consider your movers' insurance policy before you start moving loads of items on
your own.
A Few Days in Advance
• Start to pack the items you use everyday.
• Dismantle big stuff: Beds, other furniture.
• Confirm movers one last time and provide any applicable cell phone numbers and directions to movers.
• Get together the essentials you’ll need for moving day (toiletries, wallet,
moving-day attire, toilet paper, paper plates, plastic cutlery) and set aside in
travel bag.
1 Day in Advance
Try to have absolutely everything packed the night before moving day.
Since many last-minute things come up the day you're moving, it's better to
focus than be distracted by packing.
Moving Day
• Get up early so you have time to do any last-minute items before the movers
arrive.
• Make note of your old and new places' utility metre readings if applicable.
• Stick around while movers are transporting items in and out of the truck to
answer any questions.
• Consider having a friend or family member inside to direct movers towards the
right room when they walk through the door with your belongings.
• Look over every item (as best you can) before the movers leave. If anything has
damage, mark a note of it on the moving documentation before movers leave.
If possible, get a copy of the documentation.
• Plan on eating take-out. Moving is a demanding and time consuming process.
Post-Move Plan to clean your former residence a day or two later. It’s much easier to
clean when there are no personal effects in your way. You may also want to
hire cleaners for this job. Cleaning an entire residence is a huge job and professional cleaners will
have the know-how and resources to
best accomplish this task.
